What is appropriate light to convey Japanese culture and technology? There is a sense of subtleness and profoundness in Japan that we wanted to express in the lighting design. The façade is illuminated from inside the timber latticework, with its silhouette visible from outside. Depending on the angle, the lighting changes as it comes in and out of the shadows. We explored several ideas to light the elaborate latticework, and finally used narrow beam spotlights.
