One George Street is a 23 floor office building in Singapore’s business district. Closely spaced rows of louvers to block the intense sunlight and four sky gardens give the façade a striking appearance. The piloti space contains the lobby and elevator core, which are enclosed in curved glass. The elevator core’s opaque glass, the curved wall of transparent glass, and the lobby’s wood ceiling creating a fascinating composition of contrasting materials.
With the emphasis on accentuating the wood ceiling with up-lighting from the floor, we analyzed the behavior of light on all the materials and worked out a balance of brightness between the vertical plane and floor. This dynamic architectural composition makes possible simple yet powerful architectural lighting details.
