akarium was a one month illumination event held during the Christmas and New Year season. The street was lit up for the first time in 8 years around the theme of “a people – and eco-friendly town” that protected the neighborhood’s keyaki (Japanese elm) from damage. Street lamps symbolizing the traditional Japanese paper lanterns that are a unique part of Japanese culture lined the street leading to the famous Meiji Shrine. The large street lamps were existing street lights covered in a two-layer semi-transparent fabric with computer controlled LED fixtures that delivered both high-tech illumination and bathed the whole street in a gentle and colorful glow like flickering candlelight.
